A Burning In The Darkness: Spiritual Thriller Mystery

A Burning in the Darkness by A.P. McGrath

A Burning in the Darkness by A.P. McGrath is a mix of crime, mystery, romance, and spiritual fiction that features an intelligent plot and a cast of life-like characters. Honestly, as a reader of mystery novels, what more could I ask for? Let us see my book review below.

STORY

I was pulled into the story right from the first chapter. A Burning in the Darkness is a tale of love, revenge, sacrifice, and forgiveness. It’s about a boy from a war-torn country, who grows up to become a priest. Later, at 33 years of age, Father Michael listens to passengers’ confessions in an airport in London, offering consolation and forgiveness to those who seek it, but he’s suspected of murder, which begins his journey to prove his innocence and finding out how revenge can flip one’s perspective entirely.

WRITING

A Burning in the Darkness is an action-packed thriller. The writing is engaging; as is the storyline. I was on the edge of my seat through the entire book. What I enjoyed the most was how the storyline goes back and forth between the past and the present, from Liberia to London and back. I had no problem with keeping up.

The mystery itself was well thought out and meticulously plotted. I must admit I wasn’t able to put together all the pieces (though I came quite close). In the end, A.P. McGrath did an amazing job at creating an intricate web with various twists and turns, making the end highly unpredictable.

CHARACTERS

The characters are all carefully constructed. You might get a feeling that the plot and characters’ relationships are written all over the place, but just keep reading. I was able to relate to almost every secondary character as well, which is always a sign of characters’ great development.

Another interesting thing about this book is certainly how the narration was written phonetically from the point of view of the lead, Michael Kieh, who was born and spent his childhood in Liberia. It adds a wonderfully realistic touch and brings the reader closer to the protagonist in a very clever way.

. . .

If you love to read a good crime and mystery story, and don’t mind spiritual fiction intelligently woven into a thrilling read, you simply must add this book to your to-be-read list.
